CYANOTYPE PRINTING with Sharon Magill

from £20.00
Sold Out

SATURDAY 22nd MARCH 2025

10.30am - 4.30pm

Cyanotype is an early form of photographic printing. Developed in the 1840s, botanist and photographer Anna Atkins used this contact printing process to produce the first ever book of photography, recording specimens of algae and seaweed. Today cyanotype printing has seen a resurgence in interest, the simplicity of process making it widely accessible and digital technology expanding its possibilities.

Sharon Magill is a Cardiff based artist working in various media including video, sound, photography, and cyanotype printing. Her work often examines psychological spaces, domestic scenes, and exterior places, communicating the silences of the space we exist in, internally and externally.

“Using cyanotype chemicals, we will experiment with this contact printing process, exploring materials to print with, such as found objects and digital negatives, and the possibilities of image making. We’ll learn about creating our own digital negatives and use UV light (and possibly sunshine) to capture unique and eloquent imagery.” SM

This workshop coincides with the UN World Water Day! (22nd March 2025) which celebrates water and raises awareness of people living without access to safe water. We will use water in a number of ways within the cyanotype process and participants are invited to consider water as a theme for their image making.
